Skywatch
Super Blood Moon! On the evening of September 27 (given clear skies), skywatchers will be able to witness a dramatic conjunction of two lunar events. For the first time since 1982, a total lunar eclipse will occur on the same evening of a supermoon. A supermoon occurs when the moon, in its imperfectly circular orbit around Earth, is at its closest point to the planet. A total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon, happens when the Earth’s shadow falls across the surface of the moon, giving it a reddish hue. As a result, those seeing the moon will view the moon as larger than normal, and brighter than normal – until it is partially obscured by the Earth’s shadow. This event will not occur again until the year 2033.
