The low population density of rural communities can make it difficult for officials to combat emerging threats to public health. With a focus on Lyme and other vector-borne diseases, Paul Smith’s College faculty and students are working to fill that gap. Longitudinal data collected through painstaking fieldwork have led to increased awareness and action that can truly save lives.
Adirondack Watershed Institute
The AWI mission is to protect clean water, conserve habitat, and support the well-being of people in the Adirondacks through scientific inquiry, stewardship and real-world student experiences. Just one example is our Front Country Stewards partnership with town officials to promote sustainable tourism in the High Peaks region of upstate New York.
International Sustainable Development
Sustainable tourism in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park in northern Italy is thriving, thanks in part to Paul Smith’s College students in the Adirondack and Apennino Sustainable Parks and Communities project, a study-abroad course that requires students to work directly with the park’s president and staff.
Local Food and Agriculture as a Form of Social and Economic Resilience
Supporting local farmers and the sustainable production and consumption of food is an integral part of maintaining rural resilient communities. Students and faculty at Paul Smith’s College are passionate about local agriculture and work closely with farmers in the region to source fresh ingredients and to repurpose food waste.
Building Rural Resilience Through Sustainable Practices
Paul Smith’s College is a leader in promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience on and off-campus. Disaster Management and Response
At the core of every rural resilient community is strong leadership and an integrated strategy for disaster management and response. Paul Smith’s College’s bachelor’s degree in Disaster Management and Response prepares professionals to plan and respond to the increasing frequency of natural and man-made disasters in order to maintain thriving communities.
