After Paul Smith’s College, he attended the University of Vermont; spent time in the US Army; got his MBA at Syracuse in 1956 (finance); and worked 50 years in the computer business, working up to president of one of Computer Sciences Corporation’s major divisions. “I was one of the world’s first programmers (Rand Corporation) working on defense and space programs. I retired from CSC at 70 and then consulted with major corporations in the DC area until I really retired at 85. My wife and I have been married for more than 65 years.”

Stephen Fennon ’60 reflects often on the two wonderful years at Paul Smith’s College, tremendous mentors, classmates, and friends! He relives memories daily of Martha, his best friend and wife for 50 years. She is sadly missed by all who loved her. He spends lots of time with his daughter, Sarah, and family. His grandson, Mason lives with him part of the week as he is in college and as his granddaughter Cassidy did also when she was in high school. Cassidy is now in college in Montana. The doctors have stopped Stephen from the activities he loved, such as skiing and mountain climbing, he says because he has some of the ailments that we all seem to have at our age. However, he really does love to wake up each morning and find out that he’s still above the ground!
Salvatore Cozzolino ’61 attended his 60th Paul Smith’s College class reunion in 2021. While there were many alumni there, he was disappointed that there were only six from the class of 1961. They were playing from about 2:00 to 3:30. He was wearing black, had a grey hat and can be seen with three women on his team. It’s a great sport.

Clemmensen ’69 “After 20 years as a design-build landscape company owner, followed by nearly another 20 years as a project manager for a builder in Raleigh, I have now taken up wildlife photography in retirement. Named after the NHTOA’s first Executive Director, this award recognizes a person for service and dedication to the organization beyond board or committee work. Maslan knew he wanted to get out of Connecticut, so he attended Paul Smith’s College for forestry, graduating in 1973. After logging in the Adirondacks—for $2.20 an hour, he remembers—he worked for the Bartlett Tree Company in Woodstock, VT, and kept stopping by the office of Jim Neil, a consulting forester in Claremont, asking for a job. “Eventually, he tracked me down and hired me,” Leo said. He moved to Cornish and ran one of the first mechanized logging operations in New Hampshire. Thirty-nine years ago, he became a procurement forester for Finch Paper and has been with them ever since. “Well, I did quit for two years to be a naturalist guide at Denali,” he said, “which was tough financially, but I don’t regret it.” Leo got a bachelor’s degree from the College of Lifelong Learning at UNH, and in 2003 received his master’s degree in environmental science from Antioch New England. Leo became a member of the NHTOA shortly after the current executive director started and has since been on the board of directors, serving as secretary. Jessica (Sherwood) George ’83 Arriving at Paul Smiths in the early 80s was like finding my place within an Earthy family in the heart of the Adirondacks. This is the unique place where you can find yourself and define your paths direction. The teachers are stellar! I can say this from experience, you will not find better anywhere. State schools and private schools have nothing on Paul Smiths. Every skill I learned here, I used. Being able to do and not just talk about what is done later was what set Paul Smiths apart from higher education elsewhere. Here is where your soul speaks to you and you can hear it, grounded, immersed and free to explore the limits of critical thinking. Coming back to visit 40 years later feels like coming home. I hope and pray Paul Smith’s will continue to teach generations of Earthy wonderful families.
Andy Harper ’83 has been running Winterwood Timber Frames in East Montpelier, VT for the past 22 years. William Scannell ’91 thanks Paul Smith’s College for giving him an edge on career opportunities. Even though it was 32 years ago, it was as necessary as it is today. Now, he has been able to retire after working at UPS for 30 years. It wasn’t his field of study, but Paul Smith’s College gave him the access to open doors to a bright future. Paul Smith’s College has made it possible for him to be able to enjoy his retirement at an age that will allow him to do lots of things he has only been dreaming of.
